Justice Court
Justice Courts are limited jurisdiction courts that have concurrent jurisdiction with Circuit Courts over violations, misdemeanor crimes, evictions, small claims and various other subjects related to criminal or civil law. A Justice of the Peace is elected to a six-year term and must be a resident of or, in instances where the Justice of the Peace is an attorney, have a principal office in the Justice of the Peace district in which the Justice Court is located. There are currently 22 Justices of the Peace in Oregon serving 21 counties. While all Justice Courts in Oregon are empowered by the same constitutional and statutory authority, the function and identity of each Justice Court tends to be formed by the needs and values of the county or district in which it operates. Justices of the Peace typically endeavor to conduct court proceedings in a manner that allows the process to be navigated successfully by those not versed in formal legal procedure.
